When the government moves to silence the country’s largest independent news outlet, one of its journalists picks up a camera, issuing a powerful warning signal to democracies around the world.
80 Angry Journalists is a powerful and compelling story about people determined not to lose their voice, even as independent journalism falls silent around them. Following the journey of more than eighty journalists – from the collapse of their newsroom to the creation of a new independent news outlet – the film reminds us that democracy begins with the courage to ask uncomfortable questions. It is a story about remaining true to one’s values, even when the personal cost is high.
The screening on 15 October at Skalvija Cinema will be introduced by Džina Donauskaitė, journalist, media researcher and head of the Lithuanian Journalism Centre.
The screening on 24 October at Forum Cinemas Vingis will be introduced by LRT journalist Deividas Jursevičius.
„Impartial news cannot be taken for granted. This film shows how quickly and almost imperceptibly the news can become a tool in someone else’s hands. The recent protests for freedom of speech in Lithuania remind us that we need to remain vigilant. I recommend this film because it offers a close-up look at how easily the line between informing and manipulating can begin to blur – and how important it is to recognise when that happens.“ – Judita Ragauskaitė, curator of the Impact Competition programme.
