Awarded at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, virtual reality experience ‘Less than 5 gr of Saffron’ introduces us to Golnaz, a young Iranian immigrant trying to adjust to life in Germany. One evening, on her way home from work at a migrant reception centre on the outskirts of Berlin, she stops by a shop and, despite the high price, buys some saffron. As she prepares a simple meal, Golnaz tries to recreate a sense of home, but the ritual awakens painful memories – three years earlier, she survived a shipwreck in which she lost her family.
Using the ritual of cooking as a means of storytelling, the experience invites us not only to witness Golnaz’s story, but also to feel what connects us despite our different experiences.
