After the 2001 Gothenburg riots, Sweden established a unique police unit — the Dialogue Police. Their task is not to suppress protests, but to act as mediators between activists and the police. In her film The Dialogue Police, director Susanna Edwards follows the daily lives of these officers. From climate activist protests to Quran burnings, the film reveals the emotional toll officers endure while trying to remain calm during demonstrations, where issues of freedom, belief, and societal division become deeply personal challenges. In today’s world, where dialogue between opposing sides is increasingly rare, The Dialogue Police invites us to witness the work of those who protect one of democracy’s most fundamental pillars – freedom of speech.
