“I was expecting a 40-week pregnancy like any other woman,” says Daniela, a Slovak director and photographer. But then: “Shock. Unexpectedly, it was only 24.” Although the fetus is already considered a human being at that point, its vital organs are not yet fully developed. The chances of the baby surviving are extremely low. Daniela combines her experiences of fear, shame, humiliation, and hope with the experiences of other mothers. The result is a complex reflection on a woman’s right to privacy and bodily autonomy, as well as on the widespread fear and indifference in society toward children with special needs or disabilities. This essay-film is an extremely candid tribute to mothers and families of at-risk newborns and vulnerable children.
