8-27th of October
The premiere screening of this year’s festival in Kaunas is accompanied by an event that complements its context: prior to the screening of “The Saints Are Watching”, we invite you to attend the exhibition “Icons on Ammo Boxes” by the Ukrainian artists Sofiya Atlantova and Oleksandr Klimenko.
Sacred images, or icons, are a type of fine art that has been cherished since the beginning of Christianity, and are typical of both Orthodox and Catholic churches. However, they are more clearly recognisable in the Eastern liturgical tradition and have become an integral part of the image of the church.
For the icons often seen in church or at home, Ukrainian artists have chosen materials that are relevant to the contemporary context: the planes of emptied wooden cartridge cases in the front. The icons fuse modernity and tradition, focusing on the work of Byzantine-era icon masters.
An exhibition of these icons is travelling the world. They have already been exhibited in more than a dozen countries and in more than 170 locations (including the European Parliament). The sensitive, poignant and still relevant exposition and the conversation with the creators at the Ąžuolynas Library will complement the screening of the film “The Saints Are Watching”, released this year and presented for the first time in Lithuania at our festival, at the Žvaigždžių Hall of the Library.
The exhibition will be open from 10th to 20th of October.
Opening hours:
Mon.-Fri. from 9 am to 8 pm.
Sun. from 9 am to 6 pm.
Sun. Library is closed
