AboutIn 1999, the groundbreaking documentary “Gendernauts” by German director Monika Treut hit the screens – one of the first films to capture the transgender movement and life in San Francisco. Twenty years later, the director returns to the city to visit her documentary characters to find out what has changed and how they are doing today. Growing urban gentrification, global warming, the sharpening of identity issues during the Trump presidency, and aging in America. Exposed to these challenges, some have already left San Francisco in search of new horizons, while others are still trying to maintain and continue to create queer spaces. “Genderation“ is a meeting with sharp, courageous and witty gender visionaries. The festival features both films by director Monika Treut, which capture the same people twenty years apart – “Gendernauts“ (1999) and “Genderation“ (2021).
