SynopsisIn 2016, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte declared a ‘war on drugs’. Since then, death squads have killed tens of thousands of people. Journalist Maria Ressa and her colleagues from the news portal Rapler are constantly trying to uncover the circumstances of the killings and at the same time fight against the president leading the country to a dictatorship. The constant threat accompanies not only their work but also themselves. War victims, critical and now in hiding politicians, and the members of the death squads tell the true story of Duterte’s ‘war on drugs’. In June, journalist Maria Ressa was found guilty of a ‘cyberlibel’ case, which media freedom defenders call an attempt to silence critics of the president. The journalist faces up to six years in prison.
