Chingiz Aitmatov, the most famous Kirghizian writer, in 1958 wrote a novel “Djamilia” about a young woman who decides to break with tradition and elope with her great love. French filmmaker Aminatou Echard with her Super-8 camera sets off on a journey through contemporary Kyrgyzstan in search of the protagonist of Aitmatov’s novel. On her way she meets several generations of women who tell us about their dreams, love, desires, and freedom.
